MIAMI (Nov. 22, 2019) – The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) presents Alonzo King Lines Ballet, which offers a fusion of cutting-edge choreography and the classical essence anticipated with renowned ballet companies. The performance will take place on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. on SMDCAC’s main stage.

Founded in 1982, Alonzo King Lines Ballet is a San Francisco-based dance company that has gained popularity for collaborating with noted composers, musicians and visual artists from around the world to create performances that alter the way ballet is looked at today. According to founder Alonzo King, the company’s name is derived from how lines represent everything visible in the world, a concept he tries to instill by adhering to the classical and linear principles of Western and Eastern ballet practices.

Alonzo King Lines Ballet draws more than 40,000 audience members worldwide every year. The company has been featured at venues such as the Venice Biennale, Monaco Dance Forum, Maison de la Dance de Lyon, and most recently, the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris. They have also performed at renowned festivals including the Edinburgh International Festival, Montpellier Danse, Wolfsburg Festival, and Holland Dance Festival.

This year’s program, titled “Common Ground”, uses new music commissioned by renowned modern string ensemble Kronos Quartet and Handel, culminating in an ensemble where the rich elegance of Baroque music comes to life in a graceful, complex composition of bodies.

In addition to the main performance, the Center will also host:
• A pre-show conversation at 6:30pm in the Lab Theater, moderated by journalist Jordan Levin with company directors and special guests.
• A post-show discussion immediately following the performance on the Main Stage, also moderated by Levin.
Tickets are $25-55 for regular admission and can be purchased at SMDCAC.org or by calling 786-573-5300. The Center is located at 10950 SW 211 Street, Cutler Bay. Tickets for patrons ages 13-22 can also be purchased for $5 through Culture Shock Miami, a program that provides teens and young adults with reduced pricing for performances and cultural attractions throughout Miami-Dade County.
