Verdi's consumptive courtesan, Violetta Valéry may be the most heart-wrenching character in all of opera: a high-spirited but deceptively delicate woman who unexpectedly finds, and then selflessly gives up, the love of her all-too-short life.
As previously announced, Miami Lyric Opera is proud to present the new season’s opening night production of La Traviata (“The Fallen Woman”) in concert version. On this occasion we bring worldwide opera stars to the stage to interpret one of the most loved dramas by Giuseppe Verdi. Soprano Eglise Gutierrez as Violetta Valery, baritone Nelson Martinez in the role of Giorgio Germont, and tenor Martin Nusspaumer as Alfredo, along with other selected artists, will recreate the famed courtesan’s story, originally written by Alexandre Dumas. Verdi was so passionately attracted to the story of the young Marie Duplessis (a popular courtesan in 19th century Paris) that he created La Traviata, an Italian opera so beloved that to this day it is one of the works most frequently performed in opera houses around the world. Miami Lyric Opera has chosen this work as the best choice for the return to our audience at South Miami Cultural Arts Center on November 6, 2021.
Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
90-120 minutes with intermission
